The Case of... The Missing File

Katrisha was almost done with her paper. She’d been working in a marathon session, sitting in front of her computer screen with only a couple of breaks over the course of an afternoon.

She’d begun work just after noon, when the sky was bright and clear. By now, some four hours later, it was dark and gray, and she heard thunder in the distance. But who cared about the weather? The main thing was that she was almost done.

She didn’t usually put things off, but this time she’d gotten behind and was forced to do the work at the last minute. She was writing a report on software that blocks “adult” sites from home computers. Luckily she’d been able to find what she needed using various search engines and incorporating the information into her paper.

The assignment was due by 5:00 p.m., but the professor accepted papers submitted via e-mail. As long as the message was sent before 5:00, she would be OK. She still had an hour to put the final touches on the paper and send it off.

Suddenly, there was a bright flash of lightning, followed by a clap of thunder. At the same moment, her computer screen went black as the electricity was cut.

Much to Katrisha’s relief, the outage lasted only a few seconds. Her computer began to reboot, and the screen powered up again. In a few moments, she figured, she could continue her work.

But when the computer had fully restarted, the file with the paper that she’d been working on all day was nowhere to be found. She searched frantically through the various files on the computer, but to no avail. Her heart sinking, she realized that everything she had done over the afternoon was lost.

Did Katrisha organize her work well? What would you tell her to do next time?

What should she do next to begin reconstructing her paper and recovering as much of her work as possible?

Answer #1

Katrisha should have organised her paper and the report material well and she may had organised it in a particular format but the major loop hole here was that she didn't save her data well. The biggest mistake that is common among young people are that they are too intrigued to finish off their without taking a step or concern regarding the safety and the security of their work. Katisha should have saved the report side by side so that if any emergency or any thing happens to the system , she may have retrieved the data which she has already completed with but she was callous in her way of handling thing. Here, she is also accounted by a little stress that she had to submit the report within a deadline that is why her concern primarily was attributed to only one task that no matter what I have to complete this report.

In such a situation, she can see the history of various web pages or sites she used as reference to extract the information regarding the report, also in some applications some data is automatically saved so if she is lucky enough she can even view that option.
