Which of the following statements is/are correct?
i. A molecule is nonpolar if it contains only nonpolar bonds
ii. A polar molecule is one in which there is an asymmetrical distribution of charge.
iii. If the central atom in a molecule has no lone pairs and all the atoms bonded to it are identical, the molecule is nonpolar.

Answer #1

i. A molecule is nonpolar if it contains only nonpolar bonds :False
reason : If central atom has lone pair , then there will be net dipole even if
bonds are non polar
***ii. A polar molecule is one in which there is an asymmetrical
distribution of charge.TRUE
reason : When there is change in electro negativity between bonded atoms , there will
be asymmetrical distribution of charge. This will result in net dipole and polarity
-------------------------

iii. If the central atom in a molecule has no lone pairs and all the atoms
bonded to it are identical, the molecule is nonpolar.: FALSE

reason ; polarity depends on molecular geometry also. If bonds are placed in an
asymmetrical way , then there can be dipole moment

Answer

To understand solubility we must look at two important characteristics: geometry and bond polarity (ionic. nonpolar and polar). From these two characteristics the overall molecular polarity can be determined. The statement "like dissolves like" provides a good basis for understanding solubility.
