The best example of abuse of online privacy is the leak of data by Facebook to Cambridge Analytica during the Elections in US in 2016.
So what facebook did, they got the 5000 different datapoints of every people in US e.g what they like what they dislike etc that the user posted on facebook and sold this data to cambridge analytica. Now cambridge analytica analysed that data and through machine learning and deep learning and data science they analyzed the personality of that person, that which advertisement they should show to that particular user so that his minds about the elections gets changed. Now after analyzing the data they made different types of advertisement and manifesto of the elections and each advertisement will target a set of people of same personality which will contain the manifesto that person want. For example they created the manifesto saying that if Trump will win he will ban the H1 B visa's for people coming from other countries as they are taking the jobs of Americans. So the people got frustrated about this issue and the facebook then showed that advertisement to that set of people and their perception about Trump got changed and they voted for him. So in this way Facebook sold the private data of people to cambridge analytica and trump was able to win election.
So what i would do in this case they i will restrict myself from posting my private data on social networking sites as much as i can because they can be trusted anymore, as nothing comes free they will earn money by selling our data.
