Toluene vapour at 1.013 bar (1.0 atm) and 150°C is to be cooled under constant pressure to a final temperature of 22°C.

a) Determine the change of entropy of the system in J/mol·K.

b) What is the change of entropy of the system J/mol·K if the final state is a vapour-liquid mixture that is 47 mol% vapour?

Data:

  • Use the heat capacity data in Table C1 for toluene as a gas and the data in Table C3 for toluene as a liquid.
  • Normal (i.e. at P = 1.0 atm) boiling point of toluene = Tn = 110.6°C
  • Heat of vaporization of toluene = 33.18 kJ/mol
