To answer this question, first carefully observe general life cycle of plants given above.

Now, there are two distinct phases in the life cycle of a plant, diploid sporophyte and haploid gametophyte.

In bryophytes, gametophyte is the dominant stage whereas in pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms, sporophyte is the dominant stage.

As per the given life cycle, we can see that, sporophyte stage in derived by the fusion of gametes from two different parents. Diploid sporophyte is developed by germination of diploid zygote.

Gametophyte stage is derived by spores. Spores are developed from sporophyte by meiosis.
