If you forgot to fill the buret with HCl solution before starting the standardization of your NaOH solution, How would this affect the calculated molarity of NaOH from the data recorded? Would this calculated molarity be greater than the actual molarity? Briefly explain your reasoning.

Answer #1

If you forgot to fill the burette with HCL in the beginning of the titration, it will not make any difference to the molarity. But if you didn’t fill the tip of the burette then that will lead to an increase in molarity value because the initial meniscus reading will be considered as volume of HCL which is not accurate. So molarity value will not be the actual value.

Standardization of NaOH: Acid Base Titration Objective: In this lab, you will accurately determine the concentration of a solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) using a 0.500M potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP) standard solution. Background: Acid–Base Titrations When an acid reacts with a base, a neutralization reaction occurs. The H+ ions from the acid and the HO– ions from the base combine to form water and are therefore neutralized. The other product of reaction is a salt. For example, hydrochloric acid reacts...
