The correct answer is d) one gene - one enzyme.

Sir Archibald Garrod considered as father of chemical genetics was first to give one gene- one enzyme hypothesis is each gene encodes a single enzyme. Garrod observed that those patients who had alkaptonuria had metabolic defect in breaking down alkapton and came to conclusion that defect may be caused by the recessive form of one of the Mendels hereditary factors ie ; it might be recessive allele of a gene. He observed the same pattern in many diseases and named alkaptonuria as inborn error of metabolism and said that genes might be somehow connected with defective metabolic enzymes they encode.
