Continuous improvement is the continuous process of improving the workplace, process or product. The Japanese term for continuous improvement is kaizen and is widely known. With continuous improvement, an organization can find the opportunities to reduce the waste, improve the efficiency and streamline the work process which increases the outcome. The production process achieved with the improvement plan will still have certain problems in it. Continuous improvement is essential to identify the flaws regularly and improve the process. Continuous improvement helps in reducing the cost, improve profit, streamline the process, improve the product quality, maintaining inventory and production process, prevent failures, etc.
Importance of continuous improvement
An organization gains its efficiency with operations management. The company with the best operations management procedure produces the products at very less price due to efficiency, less waste, fewer defects, etc. An organization competes with other organization and the one provides the best value is recognized in the market. So, continuous improvement is essential for an organization. Continuous improvement leads to the evolution of the process and improvement can be seen in the process on a regular basis. Continuous improvement is an on-going process which never ends. Problems are always common in the organization and problems are due to both external and internal situation. Due to this situation, the current perfect process is not expected to be perfect in the future. So, companies need to be responsive to these changes and make the improvement changes as necessary. The seven types of wastes that occur in the organization are overproduction, defect, inventory, transportation, movements, waiting time and over processing. These types of waste can be avoided by adhering the continuous improvement methodology. Continuous improvement requires the new ideas to eliminate the non-value adding activities and always there are chances to improve one process or another with the invention of new technology. This elimination of non-value adding activities results in cost reduction, time reduction, increase in output and increase in efficiency, performance, and productivity.
Role of continuous improvement in quality management
The tools such as PDCA helps in identifying the quality issues faced by the organization and helps in eliminating the problem. Plan-Do-Check-Act helps in finding the solution to the problem. With continuous improvement, changes can be brought in the process and manufacturing activities to improve the quality. Continuous improvement takes care of both product and process quality and even the changes can be made to the monitoring process to improve the quality. The quality problems can be easily addressed with continuous improvement because ideas are always generated to improve one or other process. Quality can be improved gradually and ways are found to improve the perfect process with good quality which leads to outstanding quality.
