21. As the global climate warms, water temperatures in the Caribbean have increased by a few degrees during the summer. Even though it is only a few degrees, these temperatures exceed the temperatures at which many corals can survive, and thus large portions of corals in the Caribbean die each year. Why would such small changes in temperature have such a great effect on coral survival?

Certain corals are temperature sensitive and even a 1 degree Celsius rise in temperature could lead to the bleaching of corals. In this process, they expel symbiotic algae which provides them with nutrients and food.
