Two people jump out of an airplane, one considerably heavier than the other. If air resistance is taken into consideration, what are the differences in both their flights down? Please explain.

(MY ANSWER) If air resistance is taken into consideration, the lighter person will accelerate faster because he/she is not as heavy as the other person.

On the other hand, the heavier person will reach the ground first because he/she is able to get through the air resistance faster due to the weight.

(PROFESSORS RESPONSE) Something doesn't seem right here...what did you mean by 'accelerate faster'? This could be interpreted in a couple of different ways...

WHAT DID I ANSWER WRONG? ACCELERATE FASTER? PLEASE HELP.

Answer #1

The heavier man will reach the ground first because the weight will be more beacause of higher mass multiplied with acceleration due to gravity. And again the heavier mass will be helpful in overcome the air resistance. Hence heavier man will reach the ground first. Hope this is the correct explanation.Thank you
