Immigration-
Should we raise barriers to legal immigration into the United States? What would be the consequences (both positive and negative)? I want to be clear: this discussion has nothing to do with illegal immigration, "the wall" or the travel ban.
Raising barriers to legal immigration will make for higher wages for US workers and increasing job opportunities for them and at same time decrease unemployment rate within USA and lower import reliance.
However the disadvantage like contracting GDP, fall in competitive advantage, higher costs and loss of revenues will alllead to sharp degrowth.
Hence it is in best interest to maintain bareiers upto threshold level and not go beyond which can have dire consequences.

One of the changes the Trump administration has suggested for legal immigration is to change the preference system to one that places a greater emphasis on merit or skill based immigration, with a lesser (or no) emphasis on family reunification. Many countries around the world emphasize a merit-based immigration instead of family reunification, including Canada. Do you think we should place a greater emphasis on merit or needed skills? Why or why not? If not, why should we continue to...

What are the important factors that we in the United States should consider in addressing our short-term and long-term budget problems?
To avoid another controversial election like the one in 2000 and 2016, should the United States do away with the Electoral College? Would providing a more direct influence for citizens improve presidential elections? Or does the system work fine? Or should Electoral College votes be split within states, as they are in Nebraska and Maine? If students want to do away with the Electoral College, what system do they want in its place? A one-person-one-vote system? Would such a system...
we know that United States is at least using both monetary policy (by lowering the interest rate to be 0%) and fiscal policy (by having 2 trillion USD ready for spending on infrastructures). Given the current condition with the corona virus pandemic still ongoing, and the lock down has not been lifted, How successful do you think the monetary policy (only) would be? and why? How successful do you think the fiscal policy (only) would be? and why? How successful...
he United States is the only industrialized nation not offering government sponsored universal health care. Consider the following questions in a discussion or add a few of your own: What legal and economic precedents continue this trend? Would universal health care be detrimental to the US economy? Would citizens be better or worse off? Would you consider “Universal Health Care” a liberal, socialist idea? OR Would you see preventing universal health care a conservative political response? What is universal health...
Not only do economists think that the United States should take action to correct China’s currency undervaluation, they speak of it with urgency, stating that it is “critically important that we act now.” From their point of view, briefly explain why we must not wait any longer to take action. Just recently the ruble in Russia has been falling vs the US dollar. What can Russia do to aid their currency?
What changes do you see to both family and religion in the United States over the last fifty years? Draw data from the chapter in support of your analysis. Compared to fifty years ago, how would you assess the importance of families for people living in the United States? What about the importance of religion? In each case, has change been for the better or not? Why?
Discussion post I am doing : The education of physicians in the United States is lengthy and involves undergraduate education, medical school, and graduate medical education. The learning does not end when physicians complete their residency or fellowship training either. Doctors participate in continuing education and some states require a certain number of continuing education credits per year to ensure the doctor's knowledge and skills remain current. Continuing medical education requirements vary by state, by professional organizations, and by hospital...
