One of the changes the Trump administration has suggested for legal immigration is to change the preference system to one that places a greater emphasis on merit or skill based immigration, with a lesser (or no) emphasis on family reunification. Many countries around the world emphasize a merit-based immigration instead of family reunification, including Canada. Do you think we should place a greater emphasis on merit or needed skills? Why or why not? If not, why should we continue to prioritize family reunification? What effect do you think that would have on immigration to the US? Would immigration from some countries change dramatically if there was an emphasis on merit? Would this be beneficial to the United States?

Answer #1

Greater emphasis is definitely needed mpre on skill basis as this will promote domestic workers to become skill basedand talented domestic workforce coupled with limited specialised international workforce will have equal access to citizenship. This will foster better immigration cohort with higher talent and capabilities and eliminate redundant workforce and ultimately help in overall increase in GDP.

This will make immigration process simpler, fair anf transparent and ensure no distortion and disambiguity. This also ensures higher benefits of lower costs of administration and assure better facilitation of skill based immigration rather than family based which might leave out takented workforce out of territory causing slump in aggregate consumption.

Even major developed countries can afford to make this move and see huge rise in standard of living and higher GDP per capita with better tax revenues for government by and large.

Too Late to Compensate Free Trade’s Losers CAMBRIDGE – It appears that a new consensus has taken hold these days among the world’s business and policy elites about how to address the antiglobalization backlash that populists such as Donald Trump have so ably exploited. Gone are the confident assertions that globalization benefits everyone: we must, the elites now concede, accept that globalization produces both winners and losers. But the correct response is not to halt or reverse globalization; it is...
