In the Wallach Orientation Center (next to the Hall of Vertebrate Origins), grab a handout that discusses “how to use these halls” and details the cladograms given on the walls. By the desk, there is a large wall, with a very large, detailed cladogram discussing all vertebrates. On this cladogram are 20 numbered branch points, with specific characteristics that detail the division of the animal groups at that point (i.e., #1 is vertebral column/brain case—all organisms after this point contain a vertebral column, while those before this point do not contain a vertebral column). Spend a good amount of time looking at the different groups on the cladogram (they will all be depicted in the halls to follow), and studying the characteristics. Pick 3 characteristics on this cladogram, and discuss why they were important in the evolution of animals, and the increasing complexity of animals as they evolved. *This is the hall with the Titanosaur fossilized skeleton in it! The largest dinosaur ever discovered.
