Let's say that a human is homozygous for a mutation in the IRE-BP gene that changed the structure of the iron regulatory protein in such a way that it could not bind iron, but still could bind to mRNA. How would this mutation affect the regulation of the transferrin receptor mRNAS ?

A.It would cause the transferrin receptor gene to always be expressed

B.It would prevent the transferrin receptor gene from being expressed

C.It would cause iron to increase inside the cell

Answer #1

When iron bind with IRE it become bind with fransferrin receptor gene and prevent expression.

IRE has a specific sequence for iron binding ability. If mutation occur in these region then it loss function of iron binding.

Transferrin gene help into removal of extra irons removal from the cell.

So as the iron not bind with IRE it may bind prevent the expreesion of transferrin receptor but it not able to removal of iron.

Your answer is E.

It would prevent the rltransferrin receptor gene from being expressed

It would cause iron to increase inside the cell

Thanks
