Find a current headline that draws on several features of the model of ethics and values to deepen your insight of that issue. Apply the model to guide the questions that you ask and the positions that you defend.
One of the recent headlines that grabbed a lot of people’s attention was the Boeing 737 Max scandal. Many termed this as leadership issue but deep down the issue has been due to the ethical values and the practices within the organization of Boeing.
There has been several crashes for Boeing 737 Max and upon investigation it was found out that the crashes were caused by anti-stall system. However, there could have been ways for the pilots to catch the fault before this error happened if the manufacturer had provided extra display for this system. Boeing chose not to provide the extra display and if any airline wants it they had to pay extra. The question arises, “is it ethical to make money for fundamental safety devices?”
If we look at various ethical models (deontological, utilitarianism, virtues, etc.) we cannot possibly justify the actions taken by Boeing. Prioritizing profit over safety of the customers and their patrons is serious ethical lapse that has taken few hundred lives. The questions that we need to ask are
Was the decision to charge extra for the displays in support of greater good (beneficence)? No it was not.
Was the decision in order to minimize the damages (non-maleficence)? No it was not.
Was the decision to fly the airplanes without safety a conscious decision by the airlines (autonomy)? While the decision to not take the safety display was airlines’ the faulty anti-stall system was Boeing.’s fault.
Was it correct for Boeing to charge extra for a safety system that could have saved a lot of lives? No it was not.
Considering these points, there is no way we can justify Boeing’s approach to prioritize their profits over the lives of the passengers.
