Answer #1

The poem "Richard Cory" By Robinson builds an admiring quality about Richard Cory. It says that he is wealthy but does not mention how he has acquired wealth. He comes across as a gentleman and has a humane approach towards others. He is graceful and well mannered and many not so fortunate people wish to be like him. Robinson's poem does not tell much about his background though. The poem has a subtle tone about the divide between the rich and the poor. It does not show his state of mind until the last sentence where it says that he has committed suicide.

"Richard Cory" in the song by Paul Simon has been fleshed out well. His story is more detailed in the song, he is born in a rich family and has strong political connections. He likes to spend like a king and rumored to enjoy forbidden pleasures. The speaker in the song speaks as if Richard Cory has created his wealth by exploiting the poor in his factory and he is happy about what he has got in life. The song appears to be angrier than the poem.
