It is a precursor for steroidal hormones.
Precursor for Vitamin D.

Site of synthesis:

In vertebrates mostly the synthesis of cholesterol occurs in a Liver.
In small fraction also takes place in Membranes on hepatocytes.
Export form of cholesterol is biliary cholesterol, bile acids, or cholesteryl esters.

The turnover number of cholesterol is 0.6 to 2gm/day.
