1. In lectures we discussed two examples of reverse engineering that led to the disclosure of security loopholes in public transport systems (one in NZ and one in Australia). These are part of a more general phenomenon. Frequently, companies and governments learn about potential security issues through the activities of independent engineers.

Suppose you, as a professional software engineer, uncover security vulnerabilities in a company's software (let's assume that it is not a company that you work for). Discuss what you would do and why you would do those things. What are the issues that should be considered in deciding on your actions? How would you balance those (potentially conflicting) issues? How might different aspects of the system in question affect your decisions about how you would act?

You should write a two page discussion paper outlining the options and what circumstances might lead you to take particular courses of action. Throughout the paper, you are writing as an ICT professional, so use the ACS Code of Professional Conduct

Answer #1

Answer :

As a IT professional engineer,by doing the reverse engineering in security loopholes in public transport system I may raise below questions :

1) Whether proper security is provided in bus/train for all the passengers.

2) At all places CCTV camera should be there for security .

3) Swipe in and Swipe out should be mandatory and should be done through smart cards only.

4) In company for travelling at night women employees should provide security guard during night drops at home.

ACS Code of Professional Conduct :

1) The primacy of public interest :

The public transport system should be safe, clean , comfortable, punctual.

One should avoid the places where people are less at station.

Help points are there in Australia for public help

Good lighting at stations is also one important security measure to follow by government.

2) The Enhancement of Quality of Life :

People should complaint if they find any mistake or suggestion in security measures in public transport system.

Solving the issues one by one will enhance the quality of service like if lighting of bus or metro is not good , one can ask for it.

Ask for security guard when your shift overs at 9pm or in the night, Don't settled for single customer with driver,It is very risky.

Recently Mumbai Mahanagarpalika has announced one interesting event such as "Show Us the Pothole, We will pay you Rs.500".This measure taken for the road security of people.

Check and ask for transport time, to avoid long wait at station for particular bus or train.

If there is any issue regarding public transport system or any other security related topic, you should always raise a concern to higher authority and follow up for it until things get works.

In this way, quality of life can be enhanced.

3) Honesty :

During travel in public transport system, one should be very honest, like if someone left his bag/mobile/key at his place then bring that to his/her notice.

Follow with the transport admins to get his/her address and give their valuable things to them safely.

In the last week, news was there that an auto-rickshaw driver return 30,000 rupees to the lady which she forgot in the rickshaw.Due to Driver's honesty he got awarded and got good publicity.

In New Zealand and Australia , people are very honest, they do not pick any thing if left behind. They help each other missing things.

4) Competence :

Competency tendency should be there in all the public transport system available.

One should compete each other to provide better services than others.

Services can be provided in terms of punctuation of vehicles, cleanliness of bus/taxi/train, travelling frequency, minimizing the fair, etc.

By doing competition , public transport system has good chance for giving its best to the public.

In Australia and New Zealand, there is smart card system which works for both Bus as well as Train and frequency and timeliness of bus/train is also good.

5) Professional Development :

Professional development includes the development in strict manner which one can see difference.

Cleanliness of stations , On time bus/train is good sign of professional development.

Also documentation of all developed services with its pros and cons, detailed development, testing is also part of professional development.

Professional development is done by the officers involved in that services, which actually follow up to government to get best and affordable services to the customers.

6) Professionalism :

Professionalism is an act of or method of working as an profession.

In the public transport system, professionalism is most important thing, in another words one can say these are the manners to the employees of public transport system.

For example, Driver is coming at the specific bus station on time and doing his service with full dedication then we can say he has professionalism.

If swipper on bus station is doing his/her work nicely and timely, then it shows their professionalism.

So this is all about six ACS Code of Professional Conduct.
