Total compensation means the total amount of salaries being paid by the company to its employees.Total compensation includes all the details of the compensation paid by the company to the employees.Even if anything is paid in terms of kind then that also will be included in the total compensation.Thus total compensation is a broad concept as it covers various things.
According to me, there is no such trick to present salaried positions.I think it is only a detailed data showing the amount being paid by the companies to its employees.There is no such motive behind this. This data is sometimes useful to outsiders as it describes the goodwill of the organization.
