Caring for a family member doesn't mean you can't be sexist. It's how the ideology was set right from the very beginning in the mind. And a trend that was diligently pursued.

As a more dominant caregiver from the very primitive times, men have resorted to neanderthal tactics in order to assert their rights and create their territories. Throughout history, numerous wars are evidence of that. But, as Kim-Giam said, men finally come to this globe because of a female and have to rely on one to further their offspring. A fact that has been theorized for the origin of patriarchy in the notion of evolutionary socio-biology that states that women almost always invest more energy in the production of children than men and, as a consequence, women are a resource that men compete with. That theory is called the principle of Bateman. In choosing a mate, one significant female preference is that males control more resources to help her and her descendants. This, in turn, creates a competitive selection pressure on males and is able to gain resources to compete with other males. Gender roles were allocated with the development of civilizations in order to preserve harmony in society. And that's when a woman's ideology as significant as being became something of a product to be acquired, toyed with, and held aside. No one likes competition, and men from their own gender seem to have enough of it.
This is what the bible says and religion has always played a greater role in shaping the belief system as a means of guiding towards a more structured society.
