It is funds used to ensure that revenues will be earned during a given time period. Examples of expenses that ensure the continuance of revenue include rent, salaries, parts, etc.

Expenditure is a payment. It can be used for purchasing assets, paying down bills (liabilities), and dividends.

An example to show the difference between the two would be if a company buys a car. The car expenditure occurs on a given day and the car will be expensed as depreciation over x amount of years.
