Hello,
Take a note of the following:
1) Males have larger airways.
2) The radial rib cage diameter of females are smaller than those of males.
3) There is more inclination of ribs in females than in males, this is also and adaptation to the less lung volume in females.
4) Females have a shorter diaphragm length. Due to this, even if physicslly the size of male and female thoracic cavaity is same, physiology it will appear as if females have less lung capacity.

However, the fact that men are broader and have bigger lungs is the prime determinant for this.
Thank you
Hope I helped.
