A project is a complex task and there can be substantial resource constraints that can affect its completion. Resource levelling is the process that has been created to address these constraints. This essay will attempt to provide a closer look at what resource levelling is, its objectives and basic five-step technique to perform it .

Resource levelling is also referred to as resource smoothing and aides in the developing of procedures to control or minimize the resource demands that exist during the life cycle of a project. The two objectives for resource levelling are to first determine the resource requirements so that they will be available at the right time. And two, allow each activity to be scheduled with the smoothest possible transition across usage levels .

Resource levelling provides a way to manage the resource requirements for project activities during the project. One of its purposes is to minimize spikes in the need of the resources during the project, and in more advanced methodologies to predict and plan for resource needs, so that there is little to no downtime, which new resources are found to complete the next phase of project tasks. One of the key challenges in the process is ensuring decisions made for resource allocation is prioritized correctly, so that the right resources go to the right activities at the right time. Resource management within a project can have multiple avenues for success and are governed by activities that are also affected by multiple variables. This situation is known as a multivariate, combinatorial problem. Because of the complexity of the problem, there are some different approaches that are applied to simplify these to apply resource levelling. This is a fairly common approach whereby the complicated and resource hungry tasks are handled first and then any remaining resources that are left over can be distributed to other remaining tasks .
