In countries like US, people are from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Something that is normal in one culture may be obnoxious in another culture. Children may be exposed to one culture in family and another culture in school. Some children may find it difficult to find friends in school because of these differences.
Under diverse culture, the competency of a juvenile may get affected negatively. In order to avoid this situation it is important to develop cultural competency, which is nothing but developing empathy for different cultures. In order to unfold the full potential of an individual it is necessary to adapt to different cultures. Adolescence is the period when individual understands and experience the cultural difference progressively more. At this time the parents may seek the help of mental healthcare personnel to promote cultural competency. Although most of the children develop resilience to this cultural difference, some may find it difficult due to the stresses of migration and settlement, which will adversely affect their personality development. They may be reluctant to seek the help of mental healthcare professionals because of the cultural difference between them and the service provider. This can create misunderstandings between the juvenile and his health care provider. So it is necessary to seek advice from a healthcare personnel who can understand the difference in culture.
In order to find a healthcare provider who is competent to understand the difference in cultures and beliefs, the parents can use websites, or by consulting with people of the same community and religious organizations. They should talk with the healthcare professional regarding the cultural values, religious beliefs, parenting practices, difference in languages, conflicts and stresses experienced by the child etc in order to make the service provider completely understand the child’s problems. In this way a proper health care service can be provided with the help of parents, supportive people from the society and also with the help of therapies and medications. In this way the mental status of the child can be improved, helping him to coping with the situation of diverse cultures by inculcation of self confidence and resilience.
Thus it can be seen that cultural competency in very important in places where people from different countries and difference culture live together, for the proper personality development of a child. This can affect the competency of juvenile and need to be supported if required. The help has to start from within the family with proper advices taken from mental healthcare service providers.
