Answer #1

Decision making is a process which can be influenced by personal preference and experience the individual has had in the past and therefore, instead of relying on hard facts and data, some managers tend to make decisions by using their own personal experience and therefore, tend to not analyze the situation properly and end up making a bad decision. We can also attribute bad decision making to:

EMOTIONAL TAGGING

Emotional tagging in the process by which the factor of our emotional state attaches itself to our memories, thoughts, and experiences, causing us to not make use of rationality and rather using emotions as means of driving the decision-making process.

CORPORATE POLITICS

Some managers indulge too much into corporate politics, allowing their decisions to be driven by their political motivation and therefore make flawed decisions.

INCOMPLETE DATA OR LACK OF PURPOSE

Both incomplete data, as well as the lack of scope or purpose to the decisions, can cause a lapse in judgment and cause a manger to make flawed decisions.

LACK OF FAITH IN ONE'S OWN ABILITIES OR THE ABILITY OF THEIR EMPLOYEES

Sometimes a manager may not think themselves to lead or their workforce capable to handle situations and make compromised decisions.

2. In order to improve my decision-making process and skills, I would:

FOCUS ON DATA AND LIMITING CHOICES

With fewer decision variables and focus on the present data, we can increase our ability to make efficient decisions.

COST BENEFIT

We can perform a cost-benefit analysis of all the possible ways we can go about a decision making process in order to make the best possible use of the process of having information and trial and error.

FOCUS ON END RESULT AND LONG TERM.BENEFITS

Focusing too much on the immediate implications of a decision can hinder our ability to make better decisions as well as limit our factors of perception.

TAKING ADVICE FROM OTHERS AND BEING INFORMED

As a manager, we need both technical and objective skills in order to make. decisions but we also need to be well informed about the current processes being undertaken, about the competition and other factors to include them in the decision making process.
