How can muted group theory be used to understand current communication trends in micro-cultural groups within the U.S.?
Muted Group Theory refers to more powerful groups dominating all the other minority groups thus making them voiceless over a period of time. The majority culture would also ensure that their culture and practices are adopted by the minorities in order to assimilate themselves with the majority culture. This means the American Dream, American Patriotism, American lifestyle suppressed the sub-culture’s beliefs, practices and even language. This ensures that the minority not only becomes the subjects of losing their identity but are added to the mainstream ideal community.
