During the winter, your favorite weather person on the local news is discussing the current conditions. In your area, you are told the temperature is a chilly 33°F, but you are also told that it’s very moist outside with a relative humidity of 90%. Why is this misleading? What would have been a better indicator of moisture that your weather person could have provided to the viewers? Why?

Answer #1

HR refers to the fraction of water vapor present in the air with respect to the saturation amount. The information is misleading because HR is temperature dependent, cold winter air, even when saturated (this is 100% HR), contains far less water vapor than warm summer air. Air at 70°F can hold up to 10 times more water vapor before saturating than air at 33°F.

It would have been a better indicator the RH at an indoor temperature of 70°F instead of at the outside air temperature of 33°F, this way the viewers would realize right away that it's not an uncomfortable level of humidity.
