Ammonia is a Bronsted - Lowry base but NOT an Arrhenius base

NH3(aq) + H2O(l) <-------> NH4+(aq) + OH- (aq)

according to Bronsted - Lowry acid - base concept , an base is a substance which accept H+ ion and according to Arrhenius acid - base concept base is a substance which give OH-.

In the above reaction NH3 accept H+ from water to give OH- , so NH3 is a Bronsted - Lowry base
