Which would fall faster, a high-diver doing a “swan dive” (in which he spreads out his arms and falls chest-first), or a diver with his arms pointed above his head going straight down? Why? Explain the relevant physics.

This is a realisitic situation. Here, we should not forget the force of air resistance.

In case of swan dive (with arms and legs spread out), the effective area is much bigger. Here effective area is the area in contact with the air. Therefore, force of resistance will be bigger. Therefore, diver will be slow.

In case of diver with his arms pointed above his head going straight down, the effective area is very less ( probably the area is only his shoulder and fist). Therefore, force of resistance is very less. Therefore, he will fall at faster rate.
