Pilot Retention

Introduction:

The research represents about the future pilot retention based on internal and external of Air Force in order to justify if there is any future shortage of pilots. This research would answer three questions about how future pilot requirements are forecast if there are factors that may predict retention process, and finally, formulate using different factors that would predict pilot retention.

The United States Air Force is facing a major loss of fighter pilots in the fighter community. Air Force has the capability to absorb 230 fighter pilots a year but needs to train over 300 a year in order to fulfill requirements.

Participants:

Pilot retention might become an issue in the future. The USAF offered a Voluntary Separation Pay (VSP) program to targeted all year groups and competitive categories. Out of 915 applicants for this program, 400 of those were pilots. Only 25 pilots receive VSP, an 8% of the approved applicants.

The reason for the discrepancy of approving those rated officers would have an effect on Air Force current and future operations. Airbus predicted that it would continue as prominent economies in Asia creating a fast growing in the airline.

Purpose:

The study is to focus on Air Staff and the Secretary of Defense (OSD) to find out the shortage of pilots as well as to identify factors that may create a problem in the shortfall. The research will not focus on the statistical data relating to the population of pilots such as the number of dependents. The study will only focus on pilots and will look at retention through fourteen years of commissioned service.

Research design:

To focus on this research, a few specific questions were developed. In order to determine how the Air Force signifies future pilot inventories and requirements. It will be necessary that how the requirements are defined as well as to determine how to find the solution to predict retention.

A question is necessary to be answered while doing a research is what criteria can predict to determine that a pilot will remain on active duty past their initial service commitment. While other research has implied that hiring rates of airlines is the prime factor and rest other factors like unemployment or lack of education level which can lead to building a better rated predicting retention. It will need to pull data from a number of sources like internal and external of Air Force to build accurate model possible.

Methods:

The research is focused on the data that is for every pilot on duty in Air Force. There was no attempt to fetch personnel data for individual factors like CCR based on dependents, airframe type. The data was taken from public sources during the research process.

To answer research objectives, the data will be used to modeling and be analyzing several variables in order to find out if there is any connection to pilot retention. The dataset used in the models will be kept in an interlude after the title for all sections. For this study, CCR will become the independent variable and other variables will be dependent that will be looked after for statistical purposes to independent variable

Data analysis:

Data analysis is the proposed explanation that a predictive design can be used to get the future CCR values between 6 to 14 years of groups. Data was fetched from different sources to cover fourteen years of duration from 1998 to 2011. All these statistics were of the Air Force pilots except for the unemployment rates and the promotional rates of pilots. It was approximated that all results were collected by a normal distribution. By using of forwarding, mixed, and data analysis the backward stepwise regression models were calculated to determine, of these models would prove to be most useful.

Conclusions:

It is to be concluded that three factors that are applicable for all active duty pilots were significant to predicting retention. Some of the surprising factors are national unemployment rates were not suitable to be statistically sufficient as per the regression models. The airline hiring was statistically important where national unemployment was not determined that pilots tend to continue in the sector of aviation duties when leaving their active duty if probable.
