A second random sample of people is taken and put on a diet. After 2 weeks, their weight is measured.

Afterwards, a two sample t
-test is performed to see if there is a difference in the population mean weight before and after using this diet.

Why is the design of this study bad?

This design of study is bad because the second sample is again randomly chosen from the population. Consequently it leads to different set of people in two different studies.

That is, it might happen that person who was selected in the first sample might not get selected in second sample. And therefore drawing conclusion on different set of people is meaningless.

Also in such type of comparison one must use paired t-test to see if there is a difference in the population mean weight before and after using this diet.

For paired t-test also, the second sample should be exactly same as the first sample. That is, same set of people should be compared before and after the diet.
