Case prevention is an international priority and long-term care residents decrease about three times more than community residents. The published studies in this setting are relatively scarce. Their goal is to perform a randomized controlled study to test the effects on long-term residential care of the best practices reported. The trial was conceived to determine whether high-level balance combined with moderate intensity incremental resistance (the Sunbeam Program) is effective at reducing the fall rate in elderly population.
A cluster of 16 residential aged treatment facilities and 221 participants was carried out in a randomized controlled trial. Permanent elderly residents were the specific criteria for inclusion. Terminal illness, medical diagnosis, lifelong bed or wheelchair status, advanced Parkinson's disease or a loss of awareness for engaging in the group exercise were reported exclusions. Exemptions were: Baseline, post-intervention and 12 months tests were taken. Computer-generated sequence randomization was done for either the Sunbeam system or the normal treatment. An aging facility is a cluster.
The curriculum consisted of individual prescribed accelerated resistance training plus equilibrium exercises conducted over the course of a group period of 50 hrs over a 25-week span followed by a six-month maintenance period. The secondary findings were physical performance (Short Physical Performance Battery), quality of life, practical agility (Alabama University Life Space Assessment), falling fear (AFS International), and intellect.
Sunbeam's programme's fall rates and physical performance among the elderly have been significantly reduced. This finding is significant because prior work has provided inconsistent results, leading to recommendations on best practices that are conservative in recommending exercise in this context. It offers an opportunity for long-term care residents to improve their clinical experience and health outcomes.
