Answer #1

1. One ethical dilemma posed in the world of long term and residential care is the extent of trust which we can pose on such healthcare providers to leave our ailing parents in the care. Recently there was news of a mother being admitted in the long term elderly care in Boston. From the day of her admittance, her health started degrading. The children of the mother got very anxious of what was going wrong. The health care staff was attributing this as a condition of old age. However when thorough investigations were done, it was found out that the long term care provider was using a high dosage of sedative to keep the elderly in stupor and exert less efforts to manage them. This sedative was having side effects on the health and overall wellness of the elderly. This was a clear breach of trust as children spend their hard earned money to facilitate the care of their ailing parents and the long term and residential care are exploiting the power which they have and are risking the lives of the elderly. These kind of news clearly affects the trust and relationship between the citizens and the long term care provider and discourage the citizens to risk the lives of their near and dear ones by admitting them to long term care. There is urgency that transparency gets incorporated in the service model of these healthcare providers.
