Example : The gas nitric oxide (NO) is a major paracrine signaling molecule. It diffuses across the plasma membrane and affects the nearby cells. Primary function of NO is to dilate the blood vessels.

Signaling molecules (hormones) released by one cell acts on target cells at distant body sites.

Example : Glucocorticoids produced by the adrenal gland acts on a variety of cells to stimulate the production of glucose.
