Long distance signaling

  • Signaling molecules released by one cell acts on neighboring target cells.

  • It is known as paracrine signaling.

  • Limited to local area.

  • Transmitted through extracellular fluid.

  • Example : The gas nitric oxide (NO) is a major paracrine signaling molecule. It diffuses across the plasma membrane and affects the nearby cells. Primary function of NO is to dilate the blood vessels.
  • Signaling molecules (hormones) released by one cell acts on target cells at distant body sites.

  • It is known as endocrine signaling.

  • Hormones travel long distances.

  • Transmitted through the bloodstream.

  • Example : Glucocorticoids produced by the adrenal gland acts on a variety of cells to stimulate the production of glucose.
