Streaking is caused in thin layer chromatography of pen ink dyes because of the following reasons:

  • Very high concentration of the sample spot prohibits the substance from travelling as a single separated spot and thus they travel as streak.
  • Sometimes the solvent level covers the sample that causes the sample spot to be washed off.

Also keep in mind that Streaking can be eliminated by making the sample solution more dilute.
