2. In a variation of the “How old is my professor question?” a test was done where simply a picture was shown of a person and you were asked to guess the age of the person. The person’s actual age was 32 so you would expect the average guess to be 32. In a sample of 88 people who guessed the age the average was 33 with a standard deviation of 10.

a) At the .01 level did the people guess the age differently than expected? (p = .30)

b) The 99% confidence interval for μ was (30.47,35.53). Interpret this in context of the question

c) Answer part a) with a yes or no response based on your answer for a)?

d) How do you explain the 1 point difference between the expected mean and our sample mean of 33?

a) No. People not guessed the age differently. Because p value =0.3 is greater than signicance level alpha = 0.01

b) At a 99% confidence level we are confident that the actual guess of people will lie between this confidence interval

d) 1 point difference is not so serious, since we are taking a sample. Sample values are always random. As sample size increases, we can see the sample mean will convergence to population mean. That is sample mean will take value 33 if sample size n is very large
