Substance abuse is a term used to describe a pattern of repeated and continued use of narcotics, alcohol, etc which may interfere with the health, work, behavior or social relationships of a person.
In Kuwait, substance abuse has become a serious challenge, especially among teenagers and young adults. A recent study has outlined the alarming prevalence of drug use among adolescent boys in Kuwait. A group of 1,310 boys was surveyed and it was reported that 90 of these had used illicit drugs in the past, with half of those reporting drug use before the age of 12. It is estimated that there are almost 20,000 addicts in the country at present. A majority of addicts are youngsters and this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed.
Kuwait is among the strictest nations in the world for sanctions against drug possession. Having any amount of drug can lead to life imprisonment. But, it is not only strict laws which can put a break on this problem. It is important to address the root cause which lures youngsters to such types of addictions. Parents, as well as youngsters, need to be counseled and urged to reduce negativity in the day to day issues. Several rehab centers in the city are also working to bring back addicts to normal life.
Substance abuse is a global problem. It has to be addressed by the government of each country because the young generation is the future of the world. A robust, healthy and active young generation means that the future of a country is secure. This problem has to be solved before it gets out of control. Most countries in the world are very serious about the issue of substance abuse and have begun to deal with this issue with urgency.
