Yes, I do believe, rather I know that most of the devices can be hacked easily without even the owner ever knowing about it. Governments around the world have been known for snooping on their own citizens and it has recently come to limelight. Smart devices which work on Internet of Things (IoT) can be hacked and you can learn it all on sites like YouTube. If you consider a smart house, which works on Voice Recognition, or does stuff on the click of a button on your Smart Phone, there can be several catastrophes that can happen. For eg-
All the scenarios that can happen if your phone gets hacked.
1. The smart door is hacked and you are shut outside your house.
2. The smart AC is set to the lowest temperature in your house and your child may get hypothermia.
3. The oven, AC is turning on and off continuously, which most people would connect to paranormal activity though a hacker is doing all this stuff. It will cause mental stress to the owner.
4. Your webcam/security cam is hacked and is recording everything that you are doing. If someone gets a video of your private activities, they can blackmail you later or upload it on the internet and cause you mental stress and psychological damage.
5. Keep a phone or laptop about 5 meters away and say a song name. Search for the song on Youtube then. After typing 4-5 letters, youtube would recommend the song, meaning the microphone has been always recording whatever you say.
6. If you go to Google Maps timeline, you will be able to see every place you ever visited and find out how long you stayed there.
7. Smart cars which are becoming a reality can be hacked. You can reverse some cars using your smartphone which can be used to cause accidents.
8. Most of the banking is being done on phone and the only security is your password. If the phone can be hacked, the information can be stolen and all your hard earned money vanish in seconds.
