What trade-offs exist during life history of marine organisms, or when is it adaptive to swim or orient with laminar versus turbulent flow?
A marine organisms learns a lot to sense and orient itself to the change in water current. During the initial life stages most marine animals are small and fragile. They are able to detect the change in the water current due to their special body features, but due to small size are not able to overcome a turbulent flow. As the organism grows in size and faces more of marine life it gets better adapted to sensing and swimming across the strong ocean currents. To facilitate this the organisms generally take up a terpido shape as they grow into a full grown organism, e.g fishes, shark.
