You are a laboratory manager at a local hospital. Your laboratory systems can interface with the hospital's EHR system to automatically provide test results. However, there are times when this process does not function properly and results have to be entered manually. As the laboratory manager, you want to develop a procedure for doing this. What steps might you include in this procedure? Write a one- page procedure for manually entering laboratory results into the hospital's EHR system when the laboratory computer cannot automatically transfer the laboratory results to the hospital's EHR system.

Answer #1

The procedure is-

  1. The entry maker must first login to the EHR using his/her Hospital/Lab ID and password
  2. Navigate to the concerned patient’s chart in order to enter lab/imaging results.
  3. In the New tab, select a lab/imaging centre, and assign to a provider.
  4. Input the order number
  5. Enter the results manually and upload all related attachments alongside. Add vendor name, accession number and any comments you feel necessary.
  6. For any additional tests that you'd like to record, use the "Add a test" field. Use the search bar and type the test name associated with the lab-order. The EHR will display all potential test options automatically when you start typing. In case the test is unavailable, you may create a "custom test".
  7. Select the test, and input the results into the table that appears. You can add more Observations, if needed, by selecting the "Add new observation" button.
  8. Select save in the top right hand corner and exit.
