An Early Warning Pothole Detection System (EWPDS) 7 Marks:
Below are some need statements for a proposed EWPDS and 2 groups of stakeholders’ requirements. Analyze them carefully and come up with 5 Acceptance Criteria and also 3 alternative concepts. Evaluate the 3 concepts for the software and hardware that will drive the detection of the potholes based on the requirements. Use Pugh Matrix for your evaluation and recommend one of the 3 concepts for selection.
Need Statement:
- “Don’t you hate it when you’re in your brand new car and you crack a rim hitting a pothole!”
- Many of today’s cars are equipped with expensive alloy wheels, driving up the cost of car repairs due to pothole
- Older steel wheels are stronger, more resistant to bumps on the road, however are less attractive
- Alloy wheels selected for aesthetics and light weight
Stakeholder requirements:
(Active/Direct)
Customer Requirements
Warn a driver of pothole hazards on the road
Provide an audio and visual warning when a pothole is detected
Pothole warning should occur with ample time for the vehicle to avoid the hazard
A pothole warning does not negatively impact a driver’s ability to operate the vehicle
The system is very accurate at detecting pothole hazards
System can be turned on/off from the vehicle cabin
When turned on, the system does not require user intervention to operate
The system does not impact the driving performance of the vehicle (acceleration, cornering, braking)
The system does not affect the outward appearance of the vehicle
The initial purchase cost of the system is low
The maintenance costs of the system are low
The system requires infrequent maintenance
(Passive/Indirect)
Automobile manufactures
Vehicle physical designs do not need to change in order to install the system
Vehicle physical designs do not need to change in order to incorporate the system
The system does not affect the outward appearance of the vehicle
The system does not impact the driving performance of the vehicle (acceleration, cornering, braking)
The system does not negatively impact the performance of other vehicle systems (HVAC, audio, driver controls)
Insurance companies
