What were the major elements of the Classical Style? How can they be seen as a reflection of Greek culture in general? In what works of art can we see the application of these elements? Include (and explain) an example from painting, sculpture, and architecture.
Answer:
The major elements of classical style were melody, harmony, texture and style. Melody was applied in the form of music. Greeks considered music as a gift from the Gods and it would have a positive effect on minds and bodies of both the performer and the listener. As their music was associated with Gods, they invented specific musical instruments attributed to specific deities like lyre to Hermes, flute to Athena etc. Ancient Greek Philosophy was based on the Pythagoran notion of harmony, which is a linear progressive model. Texture and style may be described together by their application on architecture, sculpture and painting. Architecture styles are generally three, of which Doric and Ionic are examples of classical style. These styles had originated from wood. The classical style of Greek sculpture is featured by more technical skills of sculptors. In the painting, the characteristic feature is decoration.
