The most successful innovations tend to come from solutions to problems. Many entrepreneurs get ideas for new products from the needs they have themselves, or from problems they identify when observing or talking to other people. For this assignment, you must generate a list of at least 100 things that really “bug” you. Do not try to solve any of these problems yet – that is not the objective of this exercise.
At this point, you are only looking for problems, not solutions. Do not limit yourself to problems that you can solve. While 100 may seem like a lot, you will find that once you get going, ideation becomes easier.
Also, if you remember from your reading, most early ideas people generate tend to be more mundane and common. In essence, we need to clear out your working memory to get to the more creative ideas. That’s why I want you to shoot for 100 things. You need to work through the more common ones first, to get to the creative ones.
You may think about your own life and your own needs or problems. Think about your activities, your hobbies and your relationships. In particular, think about your “passions” – activities for which you have a great or deep interest. Think about problems you have, or you observe others having in these passion areas. You can list any problem, but try hard to dig into your hobbies and passions for problems you see there. This is where you are likely to find more interesting problems that could generate more fruitful business opportunities. As you list these, please mark any items with a “p” in parenthesis (p) to mark those that come from your areas of passion or from your hobbies (so I know which ones come from your passions or hobbies). Don’t worry too much if you’re not super-passionate about something – still list the problem if you see it. Make a list of all these things (remember, the goal is to generate at least 100, but you do not have to stop there).
