I work at an indie game development company and the appraisal process in place is a graphics rating scale form of appraisal in which the management only rates the performance on the level of performance and not the approach, the, therefore, make use of forms of rating such as good, bad, better and the process is, therefore, less developed to cater to the needs of the organization better.
I believe that utilizing a critical incidents method, in this case, should be the most appropriate. Since the actual work that is performed needs to be evaluated on the basis of consistent performance, keeping a written record of the performance for a given period would allow for a more consistent result, a clearer appraisal process as well as a better sense of employee performance further down the road. It would also be better when the performance criteria could be compared between the employees and therefore, I believe that the ranking method might be suitable as well. While the narrative method is the most promising, it is also the hardest process to implement in a regular scenario and therefore has cosy implications.
