In horses, the color black is due to a dominant allele (B) and chestnut color is due to a recessive allele (b) of the same gene. The trotting gate is due to a dominant allele (T) and the pacing gate is due to the recessive allele (t) of the same gene. These two genes are located on different chromosomes.

A homozygous black pacer horse mates with a homozygous, chestnut trotting horse and they have a daughter.

a. What are the genotypes for both parents in this cross?

b. What are the genotypes and the phenotype of the daughter for both traits?

Next, the daughter is mated with a homozygous, black, pacer horse.

c. What gametes would be produced from both the daughter and her mate?

d. What is the phenotypic ratio of the resulting offspring? SHOW YOUR WORK!

Answer #1

Black = BB, Bb

Chestnut = bb

Trotting gate = TT, Tt

Pacing gate = tt

A. Horse 1 = BBtt

Horse 2 = bbTT

B. BBtt × bbTT = BbTt (black trotting gate daughter)

BbTt (daughter) × BBtt (mate)

C. Gamates by daughter = BT, Bt, bT, bt

Gametes by mate = Bt

D. BbTt × BBtt

Gametes Bt
BT BBTt (black, trotting)
Bt BBtt (black, pacer)
bT BbTt (black, trotting)
bt Bbtt (black, pacer)

Phenotypic ratio = 1 (black trotting) : 1 (black pacer)

    In horses, black color is dominant to chestnut; trotting is dominant to a pacing gait. Two black, trotting horses mate. They have a chestnut, pacing foal. This offspring is later backcrossed with one of the parents. What are the chances that an offspring of this cross will be heterozygous for both traits?

    Let's say that in chipmunks, the allele for a black tail stripe (B) is dominant to the allele for a white tail stripe (b), and that the allele for patches of fur on an ear ("ear tufts") is determined by a recessive allele (e), with plain ears resulting from a dominant allele (E).
