Mass media means technology that is intended to reach a mass audience. It is the primary means of communication used to reach the vast majority of the general public. The most common platforms for mass media are newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and the Internet. The mass media has evolved significantly over time. Before there was the Internet, television, or the radio, there was the newspaper. The newspaper was the original platform for mass media. For a long period of time, the public relied on writers and journalists for the local newspapers to provide them with the latest news in current events.

The press, the radio and television play a big role in the life of the society. They inform, educate and entertain people. They also influence the way people look at the world and make them change their views. Mass mediaplays a very important role in organizing public opinion.

Communities and individuals are bombarded constantly with messages from a multitude of sources including TV, billboards, and magazines, to name a few. These messages promote not only products, but moods, attitudes, and a sense of what is and is not important. Mass media makes possible the concept of celebrity: without the ability of movies, magazines, and news media to reach across thousands of miles, people could not become famous. In fact, only political and business leaders, as well as the few notorious outlaws, were famous in the past. Only in recent times have actors, singers, and other social elites become celebrities or stars. Mass media play roles like Legislatures, media executives, local school officials, and sociologists have all debated this controversial question. While opinions vary as to the extent and type of influence the mass media wields, all sides agree that mass media is a permanent part of modern culture. Three main sociological perspectives on the role of media exist - the limited‐effects theory, the class‐dominant theory, and the culturalist theory.

The greatest advantage of mass media is the power to reach a large number of people all around the world in a very short period of time. It plays an important role in our everyday lives. Mass media influences our likes and dislikes, opinions regarding many important issues, views, behavior, our values and our style.

mass media is important for several reasons,

  1. The mass media educates people about the world outside of their locale boundaries - at the same time it also inform audiences about the world and its surroundings. This may come in the form of news products, entertainment programmes or other media sources, for eg. trending news topics shared on Facebook.
  2. The mass media also acts as an important accountability mechanism by acting as a watchdog of society. For instance, by raising or exposing important issues such as political corruption in a particular society/country, people are able to hold the government accountable through public debate.
  3. The mass media shapes and promotes cultural diversity, take a look around you, one good example would be the popularity of K-POP around the world - this itself is a direct result of the mass medias influence.

From the examples above, although few, in short, it is apparent that the mass media is an influential tool in shaping an individuals perception. Yet, one should also note that due to its influence, the mass media could also be used as a tool for deception.

When we come to the negative impacts of mass media, there is lot of things could be consider.

  • It is easy to force some mindset, Trend and political view on the general population.
  • If you only have few strong ones on the market you can bet they will lean towards one political view, way of thinking and always be one sided. Even do censorship of specific content they themselves find bad.
  • Objectivity is something non of these media have in common.
  • Can be used to humiliate a person in the eyes of public. If he was right or not but conflicts with some of the mass opinions or rules.
  • They have power to affect elections.
  • They spread and increase tensions between various groups in society.

Because every mass media consists of some team this team cannot be objective because every manager or owner tends to support and employ people with simmilar values. This lack of value diversity makes each big media one sided. I strongly doubt a team would consist of people arguing about everything and would need to agree on some article. It is easy if you all have the same one view on everything. This is how big media works and also why I don’t read them.

Perhaps the biggest problem is that people trust the media for some reason. A claim from an authority figure or official source, especially one with a surprising statistic to back it up, gets taken as automatically true. When news sources make mistakes, the punishment is often weak or non-existent. People keep watching and keep receiving manipulations of the truth. There isn’t enough scepticism but plenty of hunger for hearing what we want to believe. The problem with the media is the public which keeps absorbing it and putting up with the same old lies and low standards. The information is able to be published and sent half-way across the world minutes after an event occurs, sometimes that information can not be properly sourced. This spread of information can misinform a society, and cause them to have a misunderstanding of events.Obesity is a risk if much time is spent in sedentary activity. Some research shows links between mass media consumption and anxiety and depression. There can be a change in happiness, social skills, and peace of mind that is attributed to media and the internet.

So we cannot say that mass media only have advantages. It has its own disadvantages. I think the above explanation is useful to you about the negative impact of mass media. Everything have its limits, whenever it crosses it will become a negative outcome.
