The prop 65 warning is to inform Californians  about their exposures to chemical that cause cancer ,birth defects,or other reproductive harm .These chemical products that Californians purchase in their homes or workplace ,or that are released into the environment.The prop 65 helps to publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer,birth defects and other reproductive harm.This list which must be updated at least once a year ,has grown to include approximately 900 chemicals since it was first published in 1987.

The official name of proposition 65 warning is the "SAFE DRINKING WATER AND TOXIC ENFORCEMENT ACT OF 1986".There are four ways for a chemical to be added to the prop 65 list they are,

1.LABOR CODE

2.STATES QUALIFIED EXPERTS

    3.AUTHORITATIVE BODIES

4.FORMALLY REQUIRED TO BE LABELED

1.LABOR CODE:Chemical are added to the list if they are identified by IARC as causing cancer in human or laboratory animals .or the list must contain chemicals identified by the labor code section 6382(b)(1)or (d).

2.STATE QUALIFIED EXPERTS :Either of two independent committees of scientific and health experts can find that a chemical has been clearly shown to cause cancer,birth defects and other reproductive harm .

3.AUTHORITATIVE BODIES :The CIC and DARTIC have designated certain organisations as authoritative bodies .

4.FORMALLY REQUIRED TO BE LABELED :If an agency of the or federal government requires that a chemical be labeled or identified as causing cancer ,birth defects or other reproductive harms ,it will be added to the list .

The list contains a wide  range of naturally occurring   ans synthetic chemical that include additives or ingredients  in pesticides ,common household products ,food ,drugs,or solvents ;listed chemical may also be used in manufacturing and construction or they may be byproducts of chemical process such as motor vehicle exhaust .

The office of environmental health hazard assessment administers are the prop 65 program which is the part of California environmental protection agency .Determines in many cases whether chemical meets the scientific and legal requirements  for placement on the proposition 65 list and administers regulations that given warning and other aspects of prop 65

There are penalties for violating prop 65 by failing to provide warning can be as high as $2500/- violation per day.
