SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER

It is also referred to as a behavioural addiction.

The addiction involves repetitiveness, high frequency, and excessive use, whether the focus is a substance or a behaviour.

  • Symptoms include failure to maintain responsibilities at home, work, and school

It happens because of the inappropriate use of illicit drugs, such as cocaine and heroin; the use of prescription or over-the-counter medications that causes individuals to experience negative consequences.

  • Symptoms include an inability to stop using the substance even if it is desired and cravings for the substance or action. Examples. Shopping addiction, Gambling addiction, and Food addiction.

TREATMENT

TREATMENT

Treatment can include individual, group or family therapy sessions.

A focus on understanding the nature of addiction, freeing from drugs and preventing relapse.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is often the effective available treatment for addictive behaviour because it addresses impulse control issues and maladaptive thought patterns that can lead to addiction.
