Negative symptoms in schizophrenia involve behavioural deficits or an absence of otherwise adaptive behaviours. In Jacob's case, we can observe inattention to social input as well as the blunting of affect. Inattention to social input involves the failure to regulate one's behaviour in accordance to social norms, which Jacob demonstrates through his odd behaviours in social situations. Whereas, blunting of affect takes place when does not experience or express their emotions in full capacity. Jacob's refraining from showing love to his closed ones is an example of blunted affect.
