New York City had suffered from Hurricane Sandy on October 29, 2012. This storm badly impacted the city & poor people had to suffer harder than the rich people from the devastating effects of this natural disaster. The storm resulted in huge damages & 43 people were killed in New York City due to this natural disaster.
New York City recovery plan after Hurricane Sandy included the following:
a) The wooden Boardwalk has been replaced by new Rockaway Boardwalk with concrete, sandbags & other coastal protection measures.
b) Updation in the town's zoning restrictions, now residents will be allowed to elevate their homes to at or above Sandy's flood levels. This would be an economical option. Also, ground floors have been converted into storage areas.
c) Sea barriers have been repaired, sand dunes have been build & replenished. Also, incorporation of green areas & permeable structures has been done so that they can help to absorb floodwaters.
d) Mobile disaster recovery centers have been opened which will make it easier to deal with such situations.
e) Around $1 billion has been approved to provide housing assistance & to fulfill other needs including clothing, household items, disaster related medical expenses, etc.
f) The survivors were also given disaster unemployment assistance.
g) More than $8 billion has been approved in total federal assistance for SBA low-interest disaster loans, public assistance grants, National Flood Insurance Program payments, etc.
So, various infrastructure updates & other major steps have been taken in order to recover but it will take some more time to fully recover from this big natural disaster. It usually takes a decade to recover from natural disaster like this.
